World U23 Ultimate Championships Report – Day One

U23 Open Team

Today was a great day for the Open team, who recorded two impressive wins over Australia and Belgium.

In their first match, they faced 3rd seeds, Australia, in what was sure to be a challenging and exciting match. After a hard-fought 100 minutes, the boys emerged triumphant with a final score of 11-9.

Next they faced Belgium, who had also won their first game against The Philippines. Once again, the lads played outstandingly and after trading for the first ten points, they managed to break away from the opposition. The game finished with an impressive scoreline of 17-11.

They are now placed second in their pool heading into their third game against The Philippines at 9:30 tomorrow morning.

A special mention to UCC’s Ben Noonan and Matthew Feely who are currently ranked 6th and 7th on the top player scoreboard. Ben with six assists and one score and Matthew with seven assists.

Congratulations to all and best of luck for tomorrow.

U23 Mixed Team

The U23 mixed team also put on a great performance for the first day of the tournament but suffered two unfortunate losses against Germany and Great Britain.

Their first game was against the experienced and well-oiled German team. After trading for the first few points the team “found it difficult to push it up a gear” and following some very clinical offence by the Germans, the match finished with a score of 17-6.

In the next game they faced Great Britain who were hungry for another win after beating India earlier this morning. The game got off to a great start with Ireland taking an early lead of 3-0. Unfortunately, the British came back with a vengeance and following some long and tough points the game finished 11-6 to GB.

We wish them all the best for tomorrow when they face Chinese Taipei and India. (This game will be streamed lived at 15:30 on the Skyd Magazine Youtube channel)
