Weekend Sporting Highlights

What a weekend of sport we had, not only did Irish Women’s Hockey Team capture the hearts of the nation but UCC had a number of sporting achievements that haven’t gone unnoticed.

HOCKEY:

Pride of place this weekend goes to the Irish Women’s Hockey team who secured a silver medal at the World Championships. The Irish team played a three match series v Japan at the Mardyke Sports Grounds a number of weeks ago in the build up to the World Championships. They did us proud in London.

 

CRICKET:
Congratulation’s to UCC cricket club who won the Munster Minor Cup Final against Cork County at the weekend.

 

Tae Kwon Do:

Congratulations to UCC students Anya Curran who got bronze in 55kg sparring and Emer Curran who got bronze in 50kg sparring sections while competing for Ireland at the International Taekwondo Federation World championships in Buenos Aires in Argentina. UCC staff member & UCC TWD coach JB McCarthy was part of the coaching staff

ROWING:
UCC students: Ronan Byrne in Double Sculls & Emily Hegarty are joined by UCC graduate Aifric Keogh on the Team Ireland Rowing squad for the upcoming World Championships to be held in Bulgaria from 9-126th Sept. Aifric & Emily will compete together in the Women’s Pair.

 

LADIES GAELIC FOOTBALL:
Cork qualified for the All Ireland semi-finals following a comprehensive victory over Westmeath. Congratulations to the UCC students & graduates involved in this victory & to Libby Coppinger who put in a “Player of the Match” performance.

 

HURLING:
Congratulations to Cork U21 hurlers who reached the All Ireland final following victory over Wexford at the weekend with UCC students to the fore: Shane Kingston, David Lowney, David Griffin, Eoghan Murphy, Billy Hennessy, Mark Coleman, Darragh Fitzgibbon, Chris O Leary,& John Cashman

Congratulations to Kerry U21 “B” hurlers who won their U21 All Ireland Final V Derry at the weekend. Congratulations to UCC students Shane Conway & Gearoid Fennessy who were part of the Kerry team

 

SAILING:
UCC students Fionn Lyden, Seafra Guilfoyle & Mark Hassett are currently competing for Ireland at the Sailing World Championships aiming to get into boats for the 2020 Olympics.

 

ATHLETICS:
Congratulations to UCC graduate Phil Healy on qualifying for the semi-finals of the 100m at the European Championships yesterday.
