UCC to host rivals Cork County after Minor Cup redraw
Following the inclusion of Tippearary County Cricket Club in the Minor Cup, the Munster Cricket Union have redrawn the first round fixtures for the competition. UCC Cricket Club were due to travel to Farmers’ Cross to take on Cork Harlequins, however the fixture changes mean that the College will now host local rivals Cork County instead.
UCC will be hoping that home advantage can play a part but club PRO Kevin O’Sullivan was quick to emphasise that the change of opposition does not make things any easier: “If anything it’s a more difficult draw. Cork County are undoubtedly the best club in Munster and they have fantastic squad depth through all three teams. Add to that the fact that Abdul Younus has taken on the Cork County captaincy for this season and it looks a very difficult cup tie.”
Cork County will make the short trip to the Farm for a pre-season T20 in April before UCC make the return journey to the Mardyke for an MCU Division 3 clash in mid-May and O’Sullivan is hopeful that the familiarity factor will benefit the Students- “obviously we know them very well from previous seasons and with the pre-season games coming up we’ll get another look at them before the cup game. That familiarity along with the home advantage that the Farm provides could prove crucial for us. We are aiming for a cup run this year so this game will be at the forefront of our thoughts. It would be fantastic to bring an MCU trophy back to UCC to add to the 2014 Varsities crown”.
