UCC take on Cobh next Tuesday

Next Tuesday night the UCC soccer team plays for a place in the quarter-final of the EA Sports Cup. For the first time in decades UCC will face a League of Ireland team in the Mardyke, once the spiritual home of soccer in Cork. Having taken the scalp of Wexford Youths thanks to 2 Ian Mylod goals in the first round, Noel Healy’s men have a fighting chance of beating Ramblers who have a new manager in the form of Stephen Henderson. It should be a great nights football between 2 young and talented sides.

The following preview of the game was put together by Rufus Holmes – UCC Soccer PRO and Collingwood hero!

League of Ireland Returns to the Mardyke – UCC Seniors host Cobh Ramblers this Tuesday at the Mardyke Sports Ground in the EA Sports Cup.

UCC are having an amazing season having captured all three intervarsity tournaments this year. A feat only ever achieved by one other college. UCC Seniors built on this success to reach the quarter final of the FAI Intermediate cup, the furthest the college have ever reached in that competition. They were narrowly beaten by St. Mochtas of Dublin after 210 minutes of football and a penalty shootout. They have carried this form into the EA Sports Cup. UCC went to Wexford Youths in the first round and pulled off a shock result by beating the League of Ireland team 2-1. This was the first time in UCC’s history that they have beaten LOI opposition in a competitive fixture.

As well as their impressive cup form, UCC have been performing well in the Munster Senior League and their hopes of retaining the title are very much alive. The students haven’t lost since early December and their last outing saw them beat St. Marys away 2-0.

In contrast to UCC, it’s been a turbulent start to the season for their opposition. Cobh are sitting bottom of the SSE Airtricity League Division One having lost their opening four fixtures, conceding thirteen goals and only scoring once.

To add to their problems, Manager Martin Cambridge last week tendered his resignation and departed St Colman’s Park after seeing his side lose 4-1 to Wexford Youths. Ramblers have now appointed Stephen Henderson as manager of the First Team. Henderson’s first game in charge will be against SSE Airtricity League Division One newcomers Cabinteely FC at St.Colman’s Park this coming Saturday.

Before his departure, Cambridge assembled a very strong squad with talented players, some who have played at a very high level in England. Perhaps the new manager will be able to give these players a boost and give their season the kick-start it needs. No doubt, Ramblers will be targeting the UCC fixture as an opportunity to build confidence by securing a victory. However, with the Cobh Club clearly in an unsettled state, UCC will see this as the perfect chance break another record and go even further in this competition.

Kick-off on Tuesday night is 8pm at the Mardyke.
