UCC Sport Round Up
Starting with basketball, UCC competed at the basketball Intervarsities in Dublin at the weekend. Both men’s and women’s teams were beaten semi-finalists. UCC women were beaten by DCU in their semi-final of Division 1 while their male counterparts were beaten by UL in their semi-final of Division 2.
Switching to Karate, it was the turn of the UCC Martial Arts club to compete at the Intervarsities in Dublin at the weekend and performed very well. In the intermediate single kata, Monisha Chakravarty came home with a gold medal. While UCC took bronze in the senior team kata, made up of Monisha Chakravarty, Jennifer Halpin and Ekanki Chawla
In the junior kumite (sparring) Orla Mc Carthy picked up a silver medal. Chakravarty added her second gold of the day in the intermediate kumite (sparring).
Chakravarty completed a hat-trick of medals picking up a bronze in the intermediate team Kumite (sparring), along with team-mates Orla McCarthy and Jennifer Halpin.
A historic weekend for UCC Trampoline club who competed at ISTO (Irish Student Trampoline Organisation) in Belfast at the weekend. UCC were crowned overall champions for the first time in the clubs history.
UCC Badminton continued their recent impressive form in the Division 3 Mixed team, winning the Cork Handicap Cup DIV 3 against Courtmacsherry on Friday night.
Moving outdoors, UCC competed in the Men’s Outdoor intervarsity at the weekend & were runners-up overall.
UCC Surf sent up 8 students to Strandhill on the 31st March for the annual Surf Intervarsities. Cian O’Mahoney took 3rd in his semi-final for the Men’s Surf. While Colm Doyle won gold in the Men’s Longboard.
UCC Rugby were defeated in their AIL Division 1 match at the weekend by Cork Con on a score line of Cork Con 37- 19 UCC. UCC’s AIL future in top flight will go right to the wire as they welcome UCD in the Mardyke next weekend.
In soccer it was a clean sweep of impressive results over the weekend. Starting with UCC seniors who defeated Kilworth 6-1 in their Beamish Cup match. The junior 1 & 3 side drew 1-1 with Rockmount and Pearse Celtic respectively. Junior 2 were in City Challenge Cup action and defeated Fairview 6-1. This result sees them progress to the semi-finals. Finally the Freshers, had a closely fought 1-0 victory over Bandon.
