UCC SPORTS SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATION
TUESDAY 13th NOVEMBER 2018
UCC presented 65 students with sports scholarships at a function in the Mardyke Pavilion on Tuesday 13th November. In addition to these scholarships 5 students received UCC Soccer Development Awards, 25 students received the UCC Rugby Development Award & 19 students were presented with Munster Council GAA bursaries.
The UCC Sports Scholarship scheme is a well-established scheme & in addition to financial support for students it also provides a number of back up supports for the recipients such as access to a qualified exercise physiologist, & academic support if required.
Prof. John O Halloran, Deputy President & Registrar, & Mr Morgan Buckley, Director of Sport & Physical Activity, UCC presented the students with their awards.
16 sports have been recognised at the awards ceremony: Archery, Athletics, Basketball, Camogie, Gaelic Football, Ladies Gaelic Football, Golf, Hockey – men’s & women’s, Hurling, Orienteering, Rowing, Rugby, Soccer – men’s & women’s, Swimming, Tennis and Volleyball. Archery is being recognised for the first time.
UCC is delighted with the continued support for these scholarships from Irish Assistant Soccer Manager, Roy Keane who supports a number of soccer awards. This year’s recipients of the Roy Keane Soccer Scholarships included Cork City Women’s FC & UCC captain Ciara McNamara, Simon Falvey and Rob Slevin. McNamara represented the Irish Universities at the World Student Games in 2017. Slevin, was part of the UCC team who won the Donnie Forde & Beamish Cup with UCC in 2017/18 while Falvey is in his first season playing with UCC. Falvey was on the Irish Amateur Squad in 2017/18.
The success of UCC soccer club in recent years is reflected in twelve players receiving soccer scholarships in addition to two female awardees.
Michael J Dowling continues to support hurlers through the Michal J Dowling Hurling Scholarships. This year’s recipients include David Griffin, David Lowney, Robert Downey and Niall O’Leary.
Hurler Eoghan Murphy, UCC & Sarsfield GAA continues to receive the Jonathan Herlihy Memorial scholarship
Greenstar/Panda return for a second year to sponsor a number of GAA Scholarships. They include Cork Senior camogie player & recent All Star, Chloe Sigerson, & hurlers Jack O’Connor and Brian Turnball. UCC is delighted to continue the Greenstar scholarship.
The Jason Foley Memorial Basketball Scholarship will be presented to Conor Ryan, UCC & UCC Demons. Conor Ryan received the basketball scholarship for a second year and in addition to assisting UCC basketball club in the colleges league & intervarsity’s he is part of the UCC Demons Super league squad. Jason died tragically a number of years ago on the basketball court & his family have honoured his memory with presenting a basketball scholarship in his honour for the past number of years. His parents, Billy & Mariane will be present for the presentation to Conor.
Another UCC sports scholarship goes to a rising basketball star, UCC Glanmire & Irish U18’s Annaliese Murphy. Following her recent European championships during the summer, Murphy has started the Super league in flying form and already picked up a player of the month award for October.
UCC rugby club who were promoted to play in the All-Ireland Division 1A have thirteen scholarships reflecting the strength of the senior & U20 teams. John Poland stars for UCC again this year, rewarded with a scholarship for a successful year on the pitch, which included a senior debut for Munster.
In other sports, Archery’s Cara Garde receives a scholarship for the first time, along with Orienteering’s Zac Hourihan and Golf’s Michael Linehan.
Para-swimmer and first year student Sean O’Riordan picked up his scholarship after a remarkable year in the pool for Ireland. Cara, Michael & Sean will receive the Bank of Ireland/UCC Sports Scholarships
In Tennis, Daniel Moloney joins Sean O’Callaghan as a recipient. Daniel has been selected to represent the Irish Universities team who will travel to the BNP Paribas Masters U in Grenoble later this month
Volleyball have 3 new awardees as Claire Denley, Kelsey Robinson and Nicholas McCaughan all joined this prestigious list.
The Scholarship Ceremony takes place prior to the Quercus Ceremony which will be held later this month in UCC. Here eight students will receive Quercus Scholarships for their sporting prowess.
