UCC Sailing in Clifden
Irish University Sailing Association – Clifden 2018
Last weekend UCC Sailing team travelled up to Clifden, Galway where a fantastic weekend of sailing was had.
As exam schedules draws closer, it was a smaller number of teams than usual with 2 teams of UCC sailors, plus substitutes made the journey west to participated in IUSA Westerns, the 2nd event hosted by the Irish University Sailing Association this year.
Following an unfortunate bout of weather at the last IUSA event in Wexford, this event was hoping to get the sailing fleets off the ground for the year.
On Saturday morning first gun was at nine o clock, UCC arrived to glorious conditions at Clifden Boat Club; sun was shining and the wind was gusting approximately 15 knots. UCC 4’s team members consisted of Eoghan O’Regan and Thomas O’Connor, Charlie Moloney and Sophie Sinclair and Jamie Tingle and Louise Legrix. UCC 5’s consisted of Jack Carroll, Kate Tolan, Ronan Gilmartin, Susi Fitzpatrick, Ronan O Driscoll and Zoe Fennell. We also had a fantastic line of subs, Richard Thompson, Tiernan Fagan, Niamh O Mahony, Sarah O Callaghan and Mary Mac Seoin.
There was tough competition against the other teams from universities in Dublin, Galway, Belfast and Limerick. The first day racing was off to a good start, wrapping up at thirty races being sailed. Notably, UCC 4 had a big win against CIT 2. Racing finished at about 4pm, students retired home before attending a pyjama party themed with all the other colleges, which took place in Clifden town.
The second day we were not as lucky with the weather, there were heavy showers all day and it was 25 knots gusting 28 knots. Though the Round Robin was finished the conditions were tough; UCC 4 and UCC 5 raced for a place in the finals, but sadly neither of the teams got the results.
NUIG organised a fantastic event which everyone thoroughly enjoyed both off and on the water with another great display of team racing from the student of IUSA. UCC Sailing Club will be represented at the Irish Team Racing Nationals at the Royal St George, Dun Laoighre this weekend by UCC1.
The teams will continue to train in preparation for our next sailing event, IUSA Southerns. Prospective dates are set for February, with the event being hosted by UCC.
