UCC Olympians Honoured

On Wednesday we had the pleasure of honouring 3 Olympic Athletes in UCC. This summer the Special Olympic games were held in Los Angeles and 3 of the Irish Athletes had strong UCC Links:

 

  • Sean Coleman, student of the Certificate in Contemporary Living (CCL) won a silver medal in the Special Olympics in LA in the 25m backstroke swimming event  (The CCL is a course for adult learners with an intellectual disability). Sean has just completed his first year on this course.

 

  • Aoife O’Sullivan – Gymnastics from Ballinlough, 25 years old won 1 gold and 2 bronze medals. UCC graduate – Certificate in Contemporary Living (CCL).

 

  • Colm Monaghan – Men’s Soccer – 5th place in tournament – UCC graduate – Certificate in Contemporary Living (CCL).

 

Dr. Michael Murphy, President of UCC and Mr. Declan Kidney spoke with the 3 athletes about their experiences in LA this summer. The Athletes are pictured in the Quad in warm September sunshine along with members of their families. Dr. Maire Leane and Andrea Kenneally from the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences  were also present along with Christine O Donovan of UCC Sport. Family members included Fidelma Coleman, Evelyn O’Sullivan and Brid Monaghan.
