UCC Men’s Hockey looking ahead to the weekend’s Intervarsities
UCC Men’s Hockey face a big weekend of hockey ahead. The first team are Dublin bound as they take part in the Hockey Express All Ireland High Performance Hockey Intervarsities. From Friday to Sunday they’ll be in St Andrews College, taking on Trinity and DUTCC which makes up IT Tallaght and Dublin IT, in the group phase.
This flagship weekend in the college hockey calendar is hosted by a different college each year. The weekend offers students the opportunity to get to know players from other colleges and in 2018. The aim for the senior squad will be to go one step further this year, having just missed out on a Cup Final spot after a narrow loss in the semis last year.
UCC Men’s Hockey Club is made up of three teams catering for all levels and abilities, from the elite athlete with international caps, to the social player looking to have some fun and
keep active including those new to the sport. The club competes in Munster Divisions 1, 2 and 3 as well as competing nationally in the Irish Hockey Trophy. UCC MHC was one of the clubs in the newly formed EY Hockey League Division 2 having qualified the season previous to represent Munster. They were one of only three Munster clubs to compete in the national leagues last season.
Last year, the inaugural West and South Colleges Cup was played in Dangan Sports Ground, Galway. This has been penned in as a twice year game to be played between UCC and NUIG. UCC won last year’s match 4-1 after a brace of early goals and another on the half time whistle. NUIG have bolstered their ranks over the Summer and we look forward to hosting the return fixture in November.
The Mardyke Sports Grounds is home to all the men’s and women’s home games, a world-class facility that has hosted numerous international matches and competitions in the last few years. It is one of only two water based pitches in Munster and is used by the Irish Senior Men and Women’s teams in the lead up to major competitions as well as the Irish Underage Regional Squads.
We would encourage anyone interested in playing or supporting the teams, to contact email@example.com, or on any of our social media accounts.
