UCC Ladies Hockey reach semi-finals in Intervarsities.

UCC Ladies Hockey Club are a student based club in Cork City looking to build on a successful 2017/18 season, winning the Munster League, Munster Shield and automatically securing a place in this season’s EY Hockey League(EYHL) 2.

This season has already seen many new faces join the firsts squad, with over half the team consisting of first years.  Captain Jenny Clein, is excited for the season “this young and ambitious side hopes to continue on from our successes from last year, and we are determined to make our mark on the national stage.”

Fresh back from the 2018 Intervarsities held in St Andrews College in Dublin, UCC can be proud of their performances over the weekend as this young side goes from strength to strength.

In their opening game against a strong Queens side, they kept themselves in the game with a goal from Saoirse O’Leary in the first half, but Queens were eventual 3-1 winners.   Next up UCC faced up against DCU.   Cracking goals firstly from fresher, Christina Dring, followed by Aoife Collins set up the Cork side nicely going into the second half.  Collins added her second this time from a penalty corner and Dring finished off the game with a late fourth.

On day two, UCC played Trinity and were made to work hard early on, with only Aebhfinn Bourke’s goal separating the two sides at the interval.   Into the second half and Breana O’Gorman playing in her first Intervarsities added to Cork’s tally, followed by a brace from the in-form Collins.

This result secured UCC’s place in the semi’s that afternoon against Ulster University.   Despite huge effort from girls, it was a tough battle against Ulster, who went onto to the final following 3-0 win.  Another learning curve for this young side, who’ll take the lessons learnt from the Intervarsities into their league campaign.

“The Intervarsities is always a great event, it’s an opportunity to get to know your team mates and provides a great team bonding experience which helps bring players together for the rest of the season”

Last Sunday UCC were back in EY Hockey League action.  After first two games, UCC are sitting in third in the EYHL.  They opened their campaign with a narrow defeat to Queens last month.  Following on from last week’s Intervarsities, UCC defeated Greenfields 4-1 on Sunday.  Dominating possession early on, once UCC finally broke the deadlock, they went from strength to strength.  Two goals from Saoirse O’Leary, and one each from Jenny Clein and Aoife Collins secured the points for the home side.
