UCC Lacrosse Earns Pair of Victories in Galway
The UCC men’s field lacrosse team travelled to Galway on Saturday to compete in the Irish Lacrosse League. UCC played three matches against Dublin Foxes LC, University College Dublin (UCD), and National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG), and came away with two victories and one loss. In their first match, UCC defeated Dublin Foxes 3-2. Thomas Miller, Dan Johnson, and Ryan Scott scored goals for UCC, with Kody Kocsis earning the winning goal. UCC lost a hard-fought match to top-ranked UCD in their second game by a score of 5-3. Miller, Johnson, and Scott had a goal each in the loss. The team wrapped up the day with a convincing 7-0 win over NUIG. Miller and Johnson led the way with three goals apiece, while Burke Comeau picked up a single. Kocsis and Michael Dempsey split time in goal to earn the shutout.
The pair of victories on the weekend improved UCC’s record to four wins and two losses on the season. The team finds themselves one win behind UCD (five wins, one loss) for top spot in the ILL. The trio of Miller, Johnson, and Scott has proven to be a force for the UCC offense so far this year. In the four games they have started on attack together, they have produced 16 goals and 8 assists. That production has all three players in the top four in league scoring. UCC will look to compete for top of the table in the final gameday in Dublin on 23rd November.
The UCC lacrosse club has attracted students from around the world, including Ireland, Canada, United States, Belgium, France, Sweden, Germany, and England. For many players, it is their first time playing the sport. Experienced players conduct training twice a week to teach and promote the skills of the game. This season is the 11th season of the Irish Lacrosse League. The UCC club competes against UCD, Dublin, and NUIG for the Newtownards Cup in the autumn and the ILL Championship in the spring. Games take place at gameday events, which are hosted by Dublin, Galway, and Cork throughout the year. The next gameday in Cork is scheduled for 8th February. Men’s team members include Miller, Johnson, Scott, Comeau, Kocsis, Dempsey, Wortman, Ashkan Mehjoo, Mitch Savoie, Garrett Bent, Conrad Crowley, Cole Reynolds, Brian Molloy, Barry Lynch, Kyle Rolheiser, Alex Rokos, and Terrence Myers.
