UCC Karate raise €390 in aid of Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland
UCC Karate Club raised €390.00 in aid of Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland at its recent Munster Open competition. The charity, based in Mallow, provides a primary service, training and delivering highly trained and specialised assistance dogs to children (and their families) with autism.
AADI representative Nuala Geraghty and pup-in-training Parker visited UCC’s Mardyke Arena to by given the funds by UCCKC’s captain Aoife Burke. AADI were also there during the Championship, along with puppies-in-training Ruby and Veva, who worked at becoming accustomed to large sports events (sure why not place them in a large hall with screaming karateka!).
The championships were organised in collaboration with a local Cork Club – the Karate Dojo (aka WTKO Cork), and was the largest competition UCCKC has hosted in over ten years. Capitalising on last years affiliation to the World Traditional Karate Organisation (WTKO), and our close links built with WTKO-Cork, UCCKC were delighted to have Angelo Sanna Sensei, on board as chief referee for the day, bringing over 20 years experience in refereeing regional and international competitions, and ensuring a fair and effective competition was held.
In terms of successes, UCCKC won medals in both male and female kata and kumite categories, as well as the team categories, a great platform to strike out from for the intervarsities next February.
