UCC Karate and Taekwon-Do Club joint training session
The UCC Karate and Taekwon-Do clubs held a joint training session last night during the Karate club time. The goal of the session was to prepare competitors for the upcoming Open Martial Arts Intervarsity in UCD on Saturday. Members from both clubs helped with laying the mats down and taking them up afterwards as well as sharing club hand pads and foot pads as needed. The Taekwon-Do students got to practice their point sparring with the Karate club members so they got used to the stop/start nature every time a point was awarded. In addition the Karate club members practised continuous sparring with the Taekwon-Do students so they got used to the different tempo of that style.
The different students got a feel for how to handle different situations such as sweeping, axe kicks, the different pace of stop/start versus continuous etc. Lots of discussion was had and new friendships started so now everyone from UCC will know and feel comfortable cheering on their colleagues at the intervarsities. The coaches from both clubs explained and officiated during the sparring sessions so students got a feel for the different styles of umpiring.
The Open Martial Arts Intervarsity will have a mixed kata/patterns section and then separate points and continuous sections broken into male/female divisions with appropriate weight categories. Both clubs see the Open Martial Arts intervarsity as a novel and exciting way of warming up for their respective Karate and Taekwon-Do intervarsities later this month or early in March.
