UCC Graduate Patrick O’Leary medals in Rio.

Corkman and UCC alumnus Patrick O’Leary has made history in Brazil by becoming the first Irishman to win a medal competing at the course that will welcome athletes at the 2016
Olympics.

Patrick  studied for a BSc in Chemistry in UCC and graduated in 1995. On graduation he undertook a PhD under the supervision of Anita Maguire. On completion of this in 1999 he was the first awardee of the inaugural NUI Post Doctoral Fellowship in the Sciences.  In 2004, following a postdoctoral period overseas he returned to NUIG as a Lecturer in Chemistry.
In Rio Patrick took bronze at a canoe sprint event, which was the first competition to be held at the Olympic venue.
