UCC Golf club was well represented at the recent Irish Intervarsity Golf championship
UCC Golf club was well represented at the recent Irish Intervarsity Golf championship held at St Anne’s Golf club in Dublin. Situated just 5 miles from Dublin city centre, the links-style course was in immaculate condition for the event, with firm and fast playing conditions prevailing despite the recent poor weather. A Par 71 course that was playing just over 6,600 yards from the championship tees the course provided a strong test for the field which was comprised of 73 players across the men’s and women’s categories.
The tournament took on a Strokeplay format with 2 rounds followed by a cut where the top 33 male players and 6 female players (including ties) advanced to a final Strokeplay round.
The UCC team was headlined by South of Ireland champion Seán Desmond (Handicap: -2) and Irish Ladies International Rachel Thompson (-1). They were joined on the team by Muskerry and Munster youth’s player Jack Egan (0), Conor Hickey (0) from Dooks GC and American Erasmus student Matthew Twaddle (2).
The first round was played in extremely windy conditions which made for tough scoring. Following the opening days play, Jack Egan led the UCC challenge with a score of 74 (+3), leaving him 3 shots off the lead. Seán Desmond and Conor Hickey were also well placed after scores of 75 (+4) and 77 (+6) respectively. Matt Twaddle was further down the leaderboard, but Rachel Thompson was tied for the lead in the women’s event.
Conditions improved slightly for the second day with Egan and Hickey adding 72s (+1) to their opening efforts with Desmond posting an impressive level par round of 71. This left UCC in a strong position in the men’s event with 3 players going into the final round only a couple of shots off the lead held by UL’s Jonathan Keane. Matt Twaddle unfortunately missed the cut, but Rachel Thompson was still in contention in the women’s event, just 3 shots off the lead.
The conditions took a turn for the worst on the final day of competition with a strong winds and low temperatures impacting all the competitors. Despite the inclement weather, Egan shot a final round of 75 (+4) with Hickey and Desmond returning 76s. This left all 3 UCC golfers in the top 15 at the end of the tournament. UCD’s Charlie Denvir shot a superb final round 69 (-2) to take the title on a final score of +2. Rachel Thompson was unable to improve on her position but still finished tied for third in the women’s event behind Niamh Ward from Ulster University.
Desmond and Thompson make the trip to Spain next week to compete in the R&A Winter Series event in Madrid at the Centro Nacional de Golf.
