UCC GAA Club represented at All Ireland Finals

The playing of the All Ireland hurling final for the Liam McCarthy Cup is a unique day for many people both at home and abroad. The day is not just about a hurling game in Croke Park. It is about history and our past but also our future. It is about great deeds and lore; it is about stories and great characters involved in games down throughout the ages. It is about our many Irish living abroad and about those people who are new to this country who have embraced this important occasion. It is a day when the pride that people have for one of their own who gets to represent them, and their place is magnified. It is a great and fabulous day. It is a day that once again has a huge UCC connection.

The big one is the All-Ireland senior hurling final on Sunday 22nd between Cork and Limerick. In all 26 students/graduates will line out for both panels. Add in the Limerick manager, John Kiely a UCC graduate, Dr Con Murphy, Declan O’Sullivan (UCC Physiotherapy Dept) and Tomas ManningĀ  (4th year SSPE student) who is the Cork statistician and the involvement of past and present GAA club members is staggering. The winning of Fitzgibbon Cups in 2009, 2012, 2013, 2019 and 2020 has been a factor in the development of these players and it is something that the college GAA club is immensely proud of.

But that’s not it , Wednesday 18th sees Cork play Galway in the U20 hurling final and 10 UCC students are on the Cork panel as well as several incoming Freshers. Donal O’Mahony, a Fitzgibbon winner and PME graduate is involved and then on Saturday 21st the Cork U17 hurlers play Galway again in the All Ireland Final. Really proud that three club members, part of our 2019 and 2020 Fitzgibbon winning management team are involved. They are Dr Wesley O’Brien (Department of SSPE) and two SSPE graduates Noel Furlong and Niall McCarthy.

AND…… that’s not it , the quarter finals of the camogie championship between Tipperary/Waterford and Kilkenny/Wexford are on this Saturday so good luck to the dozen or so UCC players here.
