UCC Fall Short At Final Hurdle

UCD 0-13
UCC 1-6

Jackie Cahill reports from O’Moore Park, Portlaoise

UCC FAILED TO score in the second-half as powerful UCD surged to victory in yesterday afternoon’s All-Ireland Freshers Football final in Portlaoise.

Having established a 1-6 to 0-8 half-time lead with the aid of the breeze, UCC were stifled by their opponents in the second half.

UCD completed a league and championship double as Mayo senior Stephen Coen, Tipp’s 2014 All Star nominee Colin O’Riordan and Monaghan’s Conor McCarthy led the way.

Promising young Dublin star Colm Basquel also chipped in with 0-2 for the winners, who came from four points down in the first half to claim a four-point win.

Jordan Kiely’s superb tenth minute goal had UCC in the driving seat and they were 1-6 to 0-5 clear approaching half-time before UCD launched their revival.

Basquel kickstarted the UCD charge with a point from play before McCarthy landed two fine points before the interval.

It was all one-way traffic after half-time as UCD levelled through Brian Byrne’s free before O’Riordan boomed over a trademark long-range score to hand the Dublin-based outfit the lead for the first time since the early exchanges.

When the dust settled, UCD had kicked eight points without reply after Stephen Cronin kicked UCC’s final point in the first half.

It was a quite remarkable turnaround and the scoreline could have been worse from a UCC perspective but for a fine Darragh O’Shea save to keep out Basquel in the 39th minute.

Scorers for UCD: Conor McCarthy 0-4 (0-2f), Stephen Coen, Colin O’Riordan, Colm Basquel 0-2 each, Brian Byrne (0-1f), Michael Monaghan & Larry Moran 0-1 each.

Scorers for UCC: Jordan Kiely 1-0, Cian Dorgan 0-3, Michael Walsh, Sean O’Donoghue (0-1f), Stephen Cronin 0-1 each.
