UCC Badminton Host Annual Charity Tournament
A huge thank you and congratulations to all who competed and contributed to the Div. C & F Badminton Championships this past Sunday at the Mardyke Arena. The 27th of January saw both excellent play and generosity from the badminton community as they helped UCC Badminton club to once again surpass the goal of €1,000 – raised for CUH’s Children’s Appeal!
The day began with singles competitions at 10am fiercely contested in both divisions. The div F women’s saw Susan Kingston and Anais Charbo in a tough final for both, with Anais coming out on top. The div F men similarly saw massive play from both Ben Van Bree and Dylan Browne. After three sets, Dylan came away the victor which would be come a common theme in the day. He and Susan faced off against Pat Dinan and Anais of Centenary club in the final game of the day to claim the Mixed Doubles title. Centenary celebrated a win in the ladies doubles however with Anais and Meg O’Keefe winning against Susan and Olive Clarke of St Mary’s. Dylan and his partner Jack Kearney also claimed victory in the men’s doubles after three gruelling sets against Ben and partner Fiachra Crowley.
Div C players had a tiring day with many playing all categories of the competition and the majority of matches played going to 3 sets to decide the winner. The beginning of the day saw Brian O’Mahony take gold against Adam Barry in the div C Singles. The women’s Singles saw Natalie Ng come out on top, followed closely by Patricia Herlihy. The men’s and women’s doubles were very heated games throughout with the finals both battled for to the end. In the women’s, congratulations to Michelle and Caroline Hayes after incredibly competitive play against Aisling Chapman and Natalie Ng. The men’s saw Brian and partner Liam McNamara defeating Ali Zane and Tom Aherne. The final games played of the day in Mixed Doubles saw Tom and Caroline win in three sets against Aisling and Brian after exhaustive play.
On behalf of the UCC Badminton committee, we would like to thank all who attended to help and support on the day, especially Wendy O’Mahony of CCBA who was incredible help both in organising and on the day. It was a great competitive event to be part of and for a really worthwhile cause. We will see you all again next year!
