Student Sport Ireland Awards 2018
Last night, the annual Student Sport Ireland awards took place in the Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone where outstanding third-level students and clubs across Ireland were celebrated. Reflecting the huge amount of work that has been put in by students in UCC Clubs during the year, there was an individual student and an event hosted by a UCC Club shortlisted in the two categories.
UCC Club Person of the Year, David Synott, was shortlisted in the Student Sport Ireland Leadership Award category for the work he has done with UCC Rowing. Against tough competition, he deservedly came away with the overall award on the night for the dedication shown over the past two years he has spent as UCC Rowing Club Captain. David is a third year medical student with a busy college and training schedule but that has not stopped him putting in a tremendous amount of work to to expand and grow the club. This year, UCC Rowing shortlisted for Most Improved Club of the Year and has reached new heights in terms of competition, development and charity engagement.

In the catogory of Event of the Year, UCC Dance were shortlisted for their hosting of Dance Intervarsities. They were awarded Competitive Event of the Year for the event at the annual UCC Clubs and Societies Ball in March. Unfortunately, they did not come away with the overall Student Sport Ireland title with UCD Canoe Club coming out on top for the hosting of the Canoe Intervarsities. However, it was an extremely tight race with only three points between the three shortlisted events and a fantastic achievement for the club to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award after a fantastic year where they also were awarded UCC Club of the Year.

Congratulations to both David Synnott and UCC Dance on their award and shortlistings which is just a small indicator of the huge amount of hard work they put in during the year!
