Sports Scholarships 2014-2015

Irish International rugby star Alison Miller, Cork Senior All Ireland Camogie winners Katrina & Pamela Mackey, Cork Ladies Gaelic Football All Ireland winners Doireann O Sullivan & Orlagh Farmer, Kerry’s All Ireland Senior Gaelic Football winner Paul Geaney & Kilkennys Hurling All Ireland winner John Power will be among close to 100 students recognised at the UCC Sports Scholarships 2014/15.

Fallen sporting hero Jonathan Herlihy, who drowned tragically in 2006 trying to save two others from drowning will be again remembered with 2 memorial scholarships being awarded in his honour. Conor Barry (Glounthane) UCC Men’s Soccer Club & Megan O Leary (Glanmire), UCC Tae Kwon Do Club will be recipients of these awards.

This year’s Michael J Dowling UCC Sport 100 Hurling Scholarships will be awarded to Conor Lehane (reawardee) & Tadgh Bourke – Waterford Senior Intercounty player.

Alison Miller from Portlaoise, who was part of the Irish Senior Women’s Rugby team who performed heroically in the World Cup this summer will  retain her PSE Kinsale Energy Ltd Rugby Award.

The Roy Keane UCC Sport 100 Soccer Scholarships will be awarded to Roisin O Connell, Sean O Mahony & Brian Murphy.

2nd year Process & Chemical Engineering student Jean O Driscoll will be reawarded her UCC / R&A Golf Scholarship. Jean travels to Argentina in December with a GB & IRL team selected by the R&A for an international competition.

UCC is delighted to welcome Trend Micro on board this year as a sponsor. They are sponsoring four Ladies Soccer Scholarships. The uinaugural winners of the Trend Micro Scholarships will be;   Lauren Murphy, Carys Johnson, Laura lynch, & Megan Carroll.

UCC Triathlete Chris Mintern  is another recipient. Chris has had a tremendous year on the Irish circuit in his first full season at senior level winning a number of major events.

UCC & Sundays Well swimmer Emma Cassidy is another reawardee. Emma has come off a great season in the pool in her first year at UCC and is hoping to compete in the world Student games next summer.

Declan O Brien retains his Table Tennis Scholarship having won the intervarsity singles title in his first year and is current Munster Senior no1.

The six students who were the inaugural HPAE scholarship recipients this year were all reawardees having performed extremely well in their sport in the past year.

Mallows Doireann O Sullivan came back from injury to help Cork win the Senior Ladies Gaelic Football title, Adrian O Sullivan helped UCC Demons to double Cup success on the basketball court, Luke Hickey is showing true promise under the tutelage of Robbie Heffernan in Race Walking while Phil Healy took the track by storm in the 100m last season and went on to represent Ireland at the European Championships during the summer. Gary Wilkinson helped UCC Men’s Hockey Club to cup final appearances, runners up in the Munster Senior League & entry into the All Ireland League for the first time in the clubs history. Andrew Harrington continues to show great promise on the rowing scene.

The Scholarship Ceremony followed the Quercus Ceremony held the previous week in UCC. Here six students received Quercus Scholarships for their sporting prowess. The six students were also present at the scholarship ceremony to meet & greet the other scholarship awardees – Amy O Connor & Ciara O Connell – Ladies Soccer – Irish U19 Internationals, Conor Dorman – Cork Senior Intercounty Gaelic footballer, Shane O Donnell, Clare U21 & Senior Intercounty Hurler, Clodagh Moloney, Irish U18 Hockey International, Jack Casey, Irish Rowing International & FionnLyden, Irish Sailing International.

Eight students received UCC/GPA Awards while a further 19 students received Munster Council GAABursaries.

8 students received “Athlete Development” Awards with gymnastics & racquetball being included for the first time.

The event which took place in the Mardyke Pavilion, Mardyke Sports Grounds (UCC), is organised annually by the Department of Sport & Physical Activity, UCC. UCC’s Director of Sport & Physical Activity presented the awards to the students.

Kukri Sport continues to sponsor scholarship gear for the awardees and the Bank of Ireland continues with its sponsorship of the UCC Sports Clubs.

This year 23 sports clubs were recognised – Athletics, Basketball, Camogie, Ladies Gaelic Football, Gaelic Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Ladies Hockey, Men’s Hockey, Hurling, Kickboxing, Orienteering, Racquetball, Rowing, Ladies Rugby, Rugby, Sailing, Ladies Soccer, Soccer, Swimming, Table tennis, Tae Kwon Do, & Triathlon.
