Sports Round Up
Another very busy 7 days in the life of UCC Sports Clubs.
SAILING:
UCC were crowned intervarsity champions following 3 days of sailing in Kilrush.
The teams were as follows:
UCC 1: Gold Fleet winners
Fionn Lyden(4th year), Sinead Barnett(1st year), Jil Mcginley(2nd Year), Eoin Lyden(2nd year), Aodh Kennedy(4th year), Brendan Lyden(UCC alumni from Last year) (Captain). Sub: Lisa Smith(UCC alumni from last year) Lisa took over on the last day and a half
UCC 3 came second in Silver Fleet:
Liam Manning(4th year)(Captain), Lorcan Wiseman(4th year), Sorcha O’ Sullivan(3rd year), Meave O’ Sullivan(3rd year), Cliodhna O’ Regan(3rd year), Claire Cronin(3rd year)
UCC 4 also came second in Bronze Fleet:
Jack Carrigy (4th year) (Captain, Club Captain), Sadbh O’ Leary
(2nd year), Eoin Lyden (2nd year), Lorraine Barry (2nd Year), Paddy Hogan (3rd year), Diane Macilwraith (3rd year)
KARATE:
UCC were crowned overall intervarsity champions at the Karate intervarsities which they hosted in the Mardyke Arena last Saturday
LADIES SOCCER:
UCC were beaten intervarsity finalists losing 0-1 to Carlow IT in the final minute of extra time in Limerick on Friday
LADIES GAELIC FOOTBALL:
UCC were beaten by UL in the semi-final of the O Connor Cup in Dublin in Saturday
RUGBY:
UCC U20’s won the Donal Walsh Trophy in Tralee on Sunday defeating Garryowen. Final score was UCC 15: 8 Garryowen
UCC Bulldogs defeated Ballincollig 15-10 after extra time in their champions league semi-final
Irish students defeated their Scottish counterparts 33-17 in Scotland at the weekend. The Irish side were captained by UCC Quercus Sports Scholar Cian Bohane
UCC ‘s Quercus Sports Scholar Jack O Sullivan was again awarded “Player of the Match “ for the Irish U20’s in their Six nations match at the weekend
SOCCER:
UCC hosted the Crowley Cup in Cork & UCC Junior soccer team won the Duggan Cup defeating UL 3-2 at the Farm on Saturday.
UCC seniors have qualifies for the Donie Forde Cup Final following their 2-0 semi-final win over Mayfield at the weekend
UCC’s Sean McLoughlin has been shortlisted for FAI “Colleges & Universities International Player of the Year” in recognition of his performances for UCC & the Irish Universities last season. The winner will be announced at their national awards on tv at the weekend.
UCC Utd (staff team) defeated Cork Co Council 3-0 in their Business League match at the weekend
HOCKEY:
UCC senior ladies defeated Waterford 6-0 to be one match away from retaining their Munster Senior League title.
UCC ladies “2” were beaten 3-2 by Catholic Institute
UCC ladies division 3 were beaten 3-0 by Cork Harlequins
UCC ladies division 2 were beaten in their cup semi final by CofI
UCC Men’s “B” won 5-1 against Midleton “B” at the weekend to leave them in with a chance of winning their league next weekend.
ATHLETICS:
UCC Graduate Phil Healy received the February Southside Sports Star of the Month Award for her recent indoor performances
UCC Graduate Jill Hodgins received the overall Cork City Sports “Athlete of the Year Award” at the River Lee Hotel function last week.
Prof Ken Higgs (UCC Staff AC) won 2 silver medals at the National Master’s indoor track championships at AIT in the 400m and 800m events, in his age category on Saturday
