Sigerson Cup launched in UCC
Independent.ie Higher Education GAA Football Championships Weekend 2015 Launch
The 2015 Independent.ie Higher Education GAA Football Championships Weekend was launched yesterday on the campus of reigning Sigerson champions University College Cork.
The final and semi-final of the prestigious Independent.ie Sigerson Cup will be hosted by the college in the Mardyke on 20th February and 21st February. In addition, UCC will host also the Independent.ie sponsored Trench and Corn na Mac Leinn Cup, a total of six semi-finals on Friday and three finals on Saturday, as well as the Corn Comhairle Ardoideachais final on the Friday of what promises to be fantastic weekend of Gaelic Football.
UCC President, Michael Murphy, said that.‘We are proud and honoured to host the Sigerson Cup for 2015. George Sigerson is part of our tradition in UCC as he was a Medical Graduate of the old Queen’s College Cork in 1859. The competition is a major national Gaelic Football event where players from all counties have the opportunity to forge relationships that last a lifetime – without county borders. This is the essence of the competition.”
“Sport has been intrinsic to the student life at University College Cork since it’s foundation and so UCC are delighted to welcome the wider football fraternity from all Third Level educational institutions throughout Ireland and beyond to Cork next February”
Dr Con Murphy (President, UCC Gaelic Football Club) was also present for this morning’s photocall and echoed Michael’s sentiments.
‘UCC GAA Club are delighted and honoured to host the finals of these competitions this year. We are only too aware ourselves of how difficult it will be to qualify for the weekend.”
“The competitions are a very important part of a student’s playing life and above all one should not lose sight of the fact we compete for enjoyment. We would like to thank Independent.ie for their sponsorship and look forward to welcoming them to the Markdyke on the first championship weekend of their patronage. We also extend a big welcome to all Colleges who will visit Cork on February 20th and 21st”
Speaking on behalf of the competition’s new sponsor Ger Keville, Independent.ie Sports Editor said “Independent.ie is Ireland’s premier destination for sports, complete with up to date coverage and news of all competitions. As the major sponsor of the Sigerson Cup we are excited to be able to provide even more coverage of such a prestigious competition, loved by Irish people.”
The competition was founded in 1911 when Sigerson, an academic and scholar, donated the cup as up until then there had been no intervarsity tournament for Gaelic Football. Until 1933, the Sigerson Cup was played out as a three team league involving UCD, UCC and UCG and interestingly in the first three years of the competition all of three colleges had their name etched onto the prestigious trophy with UCD claiming the very first one. Queens University, Belfast later came on board in 1933. However, since its inception the Sigerson Cup has evolved into a nationwide tournament with several universities, institute of technology’s and colleges now all taking part. IT Tralee became the first non-university side to win the Sigerson Cup, when they claimed the title in 1997.
As defending champions UCC will face stiff competition to retain their crown this year from the likes of recent league winners DCU, while defeated league finalists St.Mary’s College, Belfast also impressed during their campaign this winter. Fixtures commence on Tuesday January 27th with a mouth-watering local derby between the hosts and Cork IT in the Mardyke (2.30pm) the highlight of the opening days action (full Independent.ie HE GAA Championship fixtures available on www.he.gaa.ie).
This year’s final will take place in the Mardyke on Saturday February 21st and will be televised live on TG4.
