Off The Booze On The Ball
‘Off the Booze & On the Ball’ is a health challenge with a twist run by the GAA. Not only does it offer participants an opportunity to take a break from alcohol for a few weeks following the excesses of the New Year, it also provides clubs and teams with a great way to raise some badly needed funds in a fun way.
It all started in January 2012 as an attempt to contribute to the growing conversation in Ireland about how we engage with alcohol. But instead of just encouraging members to go ‘Off the Booze’ they were also encouraged to get ‘On the Ball’ by taking up some health activities during their period of abstinence. Members from almost 250 clubs registered in year one while last year seven third level colleges got in on the fun and rolled out #thechallenge to their students.
This year things have gone even further and now a participating football and hurling club (you must have at least 15 members registered to be in with a chance to win) can win a training session for their team with Oisin McConville or Brendan Cummins. Either the Sam Maguire or Liam McCarthy cup will accompany our All Stars on the day of the training session making it a great day for all the club, young and old. We’ll be there to record it all with an article and images being used on GAA.ie to acknowledge the club’s great efforts.
On top of this, of course, all participants can seek sponsorship from their family and friends either by using the OTBOTB sponsorship card of the new online fundraising porthole provided by iFundraise. It’s a win win situation!
Other great prizes this year include the chance for a college GAA club to have their annual registration fees waved while one lucky participant who engages with the official GAA Twitter and Facebook social media pages during their challenge could win an Ipad mini.
