Kelly Cup Champions 2019

In March 2019, our Premier Squad captured the Kelly Cup in dramatic fashion for the first time since 2013. The route to the final was far from straight forward.

Our semi final opponents were the hosts, University of Ulster Jordanstown (UUJ). The game was an exciting encounter to say the least, we took the lead through Christina Dring but the home team grabbed one back almost immediately. Again we went ahead courtesy of a stunning free kick from captain Ciara Mc Namara. UUJ never gave up and scored once again to draw level.

Extra time was now a reality. UUJ capitalized on strong wind and took the lead. In the depths of extra time Vanessa Ogbonna was on hand to find an equalizer.

Penalties would decide our destiny. Thankfully we went through on a scoreline of 4-3.

The Final would take place between ourselves and Maynooth University, a side no stranger to success having won the league in 2019.

This game suffered as a result of gale force winds but an exciting encounter non the less. There were chances a plenty at either ends with both sides failing to convert their chances.  We took the lead minutes before the end of time when lightning quick Christina Dring ran onto a perfectly placed ball from Ciara Mc Namara. Dring made no mistake and took her chance.

Seconds before full time Sarah Mc Kevitt of Maynooth someone how saw her free kick hit the back of the UCC net.

Extra time and there was very little between the teams.

Once again we found ourselves in a penalty shootout. Goal keeper Clodagh Walsh was the hero of the hour as she saved Maynooth’s final spot kick. Up stepped Vanessa Ogbonna who secured the Kelly Cup for UCC for the first time since 2013 !!
