Henley Royal Regatta 2015.
2015 heralded UCC’s return to probably the most prestigious regatta in the world; Henley Royal Regatta. The standards were always going to be fiercely high, but the success of the club at racing this season merited entry to this regatta that attracts top class crews from all over the world.
This year saw a record entry for Henley, with 50 crews entered in The Prince Albert Challenge Cup (Students 4+) alone. Only 24 crews would gain qualification to the main draw in this event, through time trials that took place last Friday. UCC sent David O’ Leary, Sean O’ Sullivan, Tomás Power and Alex O’ Riordan along with cox Becky O’ Sullivan to compete in this event.
Though the 4+ put in a valiant effort, they unfortunately did not gain qualification to the main draw coming 23rd out of 38 in the time trial with the top 12 to qualify. They went on then to undertake a speed work camp over in Henley in advance of the upcoming Irish Championships back home.
As disappointed as the lads were, to have a UCC crew take part in such a prestigious event and gain such valuable experience against top international crews is priceless and this year’s defeat will only fuel our athletes to return next year and better our results.
Next on the agenda are the Irish National Rowing Championships taking place from the 10th – 12th July, stay tuned for a full run down of UCC’s entries !
