Galway Head of the River 2015
UCCRC returned to the River Corrib on the 15th of March for Galway Head of the River, with a full squad this time and not just the Men’s crews. The 4.4km stretch of water was calm and the wind was light so the conditions were ideal for setting fast times, which was good because many of the crews who went up to race for the club were new combinations. The event was split into 3 separate heads so as to make the timing of boats easier and also to allow the athletes to recover after races.
The first head saw UCC win the Men’s Senior 4-, Women’s Senior 4X-, and Men’s Club 2 4+, with the Men’s Intermediate 4+ obtaining a fast time in a category with no other competitors. The second head saw Saoirse Horgan come 2nd by only 3 seconds in the Women’s Intermediate 1X. Denis O’Riordan and Ciarán O’Hara put in a good performance in their first race together in the Men’s Intermediate 2-, while Amy Bulman set an impressive time as the only rower in the Women’s Senior 1X. The final head saw the Women’s Senior 2X and Women’s Senior 4- row strong despite having no competition and setting fast times on the course.
These wins proved that UCC are competitive at all levels in the entire range of rowing categories in Ireland. Although many of these categories were small, the weekend as a whole proved just how serious the squad is about racing well and is sure to boost the confidence of all crew members heading into Intervarsities on the 10th of April.
