First league match win!!
The women’s side left for WIT yesterday evening for their first league match of the season. With a very steady start from UCC women’s rugby team, the lee side were under the post twice with two very structured tries in the first ten minutes. (J. O’ Donnell & H. Lane), both converted by Mairead Ni Chathasaigh. The girls had hit the ground running and were very confident in their attack. With strong offloads leading to more solid breaks from Dinah O’ Mahony & Zoe Lynch. With two more tries scored in the first half (C. Scanlan & D. O’ Mahony) the girls were well in the lead at half time. Throughout the second half, WIT really stepped up and put the girls under pressure, with numerous times the girls had their backs against the wall battling the home side. Ciara Scanlan, (Back of the match) turned the ball over and made a fantastic break to relieve UCC of the pressure. Four more tries were scored in the second half, but one in particular was very significant, with an outstanding pass to Sarah O Donovan, who made sure nobody was going to stop her, she crossed the line, nearly celebrating before she grounded the ball! With brilliant performances from the new girls and leadership from the older players (especially H. Lane, captain and player of the match) the girls ran out with a 51-7 win. The scoreboard had really reflected the work that has been put in at training over the past number of weeks. Well done to all involved!!
