Equestrian Intervarsities to be hosted by UCC & CIT

The weekend of the 21st and 22nd February will see the National Equestrian Intervarsity Championships being co-hosted by UCC Equestrian club. Over 250 competitors from colleges around the country descend on Maryville Stables, Carrigaline, Co. Cork, to battle it out for the top spots. Dressage and show jumping will take place over the two days of competition with four rounds in each, operating in a knockout style. 1st and 2nd Rounds of both competitions will take place on Saturday and the penultimate and final rounds on the Sunday. In these competitions you do not ride your own horse. Horses are supplied by the organising college and you are judged and marked against the other people who ride the same horse as you, thus keeping the system fair.  The standard increases in difficulty with each round. First round begins at 90cm, working its way up to a final round height at 1.20m with the same concept for dressage. There is also a Prix Caprilli competition for newbies or the less experienced rider which involves a basic dressage test with some cross-poles incorporated. The club has been planning and working on the weekend since our selection to host last February. It is the most highly anticipated weekend of the year for student riders and UCC Equestrian Club intends to give the 300 competitors and supporters a weekend to remember. The club will also have 27 members take part in the competitions in order to see the overall college accolade return to us having last won it in 2011 and only narrowly missing out on it in recent years.
