DCU Claim Sigerson Cup Title
UCC were forced to give up their Sigerson Cup crown when they lost out to DCU in dramatic fashion in the Mardyke on Saturday. Twelve months ago, UCC claimed their 21st title in Belfast with a last gap winner but on this occasion they came out the wrong side of a thrilling contest as Conor McGraynor’s 79th minute point gave DCU a 1-14 to 2-10 extra time victory. It looked as if UCC would claim a second successive title when Alan O’Donovan punched to the net three minutes from time but Tadhg Lowe’s free with the last kick of normal time ensured another 20 minutes. Despite David Culhane’ superb goal seconds into the second period of extra time it wasn’t enough for UCC as McGraynor’s late score gave the Dublin college their fourth title.
We would like to thank the players and management for their tremendous effort and commitment all year. They showed great heart and character on Saturday, it just wasn’t to be our day.
Meanwhile, the Garda College defeated St.Pat’s 1-13 to 0-10 in the Trench Cup Final while UU Magee secured the Corn na Mic Leinn title with a narrow 0-9 to 0-8 win over RCSI.
A huge thanks to all those who contributed in hosting the Finals Weekend of the Higher Education Competitions. There was a significant amount of work put in over the last weeks and months by a number of people and we would like to once again thank them for this.
