CUFL Futsal Regionals (6/12/17)
In December, our club hosted the CUFL Futsal Regional Championships in the Mardyke Arena. This was our newly founded club’s first competition and our team had high hopes on the day. There was a great atmosphere in the home dressing room before the competition and everyone was very excited to represent UCC Futsal as a team for the first time. Also competing on the day were CIT, LIT, and Limerick College of Further Education.
UCC started very strongly with a convincing 4-0 win against CIT in the first game of the competition, and so confidence was very high amongst our team. UCC continued to see out the competition on a high, with an incredible 7-1 win over Limerick College of Further Education, and a 5-0 win over LIT. Going into the final against CIT, our team was very confident, especially after having beaten them so comfortably in the first match. However, CIT were not willing to go down without a fight. UCC started well and got 2 fast goals, and so things were looking good for the home team. However, as fatigue set in after 3 other games, our team’s organisation started to deteriorate and after 2 quick counter attacks, it was 2-2.
In extra time, CIT kept the pressure on and UCC were struggling to get a threatening attack going. Eventually we managed to see out the game at 2-2, and so the final was to be decided by a penalty shootout, and so the team agreed amongst themselves who would be taking on the responsibility of taking them. To the delight of our team, our goalkeeper Andrea Visentin stepped up and made 3 incredible saves during the shootout, winning the Regional Championships for UCC. Andrea had performed very well during the day making a number of great saves throughout the tournament, but his performance in the shootout was unrivaled.
A huge congratulations is due to the whole team for their victory in the tournament. Each player gave the team 100% and contributed towards the team’s success on the day. Next stop: National Championships in WIT.
