Cricket – UCC open Munster League campaign with victory over Limerick
UCC had a good start to the 2016 MCU Division 2 league on Sunday, defeating Limerick 3 by 5 wickets in a rain-affected match at Curraheen Park. Having lost the toss, the hosts found themselves in the field but a terrific team bowling performance with particular contributions from Kevin O’Sullivan (3-26) and Sathiendran Ravikrishnan restricted Limerick to 127-7 in their 38 overs (reduced from 40 overs due to rain). Nevertheless, given the tricky conditions and Limerick’s solid bowling unit, the students did not underestimate the size of the task in front of them.
The chase got off to a poor start when captain Shahrukh Nawaz and fellow opener Rohit Dhamane were out for singles but a partnership between Kaleem Ahmed and Kevin O’Sullivan steadied the ship. Following another rain delay the target was revised to 111 from 33 overs and despite losing three more wickets, UCC completed the tricky chase inside 29 overs, Vamshi Murali Krannan finishing up on 43* to hand UCC a perfect start to the league season.
