Canon O’Brien Trophy

Tonight (6th January 2017) the UCC Fitzgibbon team will play the Cork Senior Hurlers in the annual challenge game for the Canon O’Brien Trophy at the Mardyke GAA Grounds, 7pm.

Michael O’Brien is a name that has a special place in the history and tradition of the College GAA Club. Along with Dan Beechinor and Professor Willie J Smyth, he was to play a significant role in the winning of ten Fitzgibbon Cups between 1981 and 1991 including the famous eighth in a row of ’81 to ’88.

In his capacity as a hurling coach, O’Brien left a lasting legacy that touched a whole generation of students in their sporting, academic and personal lives.

The O’Brien family have presented a replica of the Fitzgibbon Cup in his honour and Saturday marks the 5th occasion that this competition will be played and the 3nd time since the Canon’s passing in November 2014.

As per usual there will not be an admission fee but those attending are asked to donate to the Cara Junior School for children with autism in Mayfield. Cara Junior School caters for about 60 children, ranging in age from 4 to 12 with a dual diagnosis of autism and intellectual disability, most of whom are non-verbal. Last June, following an act of vandalism, a shed of equipment was burned and the school are trying to replace what was lost. If you are at the game please give what you can to the collectors at the gate.
