Busy Weekend tinged with Sadness as former UCC players honoured.
A super Saturday of sports activity awaits Cork Sports people in the Mardyke tomorrow. The UCC hockey, hurling and rugby teams are all in action in the Mardyke tomorrow afternoon while the National Basketball Cup Semi-finals take place indoors in the Arena. However the day will also mark the recent passing of 2 UCC club men.
Eric Philpott (pictured below in the Ballincollig Colours), a former UCC and Cork footballer who won a Sigerson Cup with the college in the 60’s will be honoured with a minutes silence prior to the throw in of the Canon O’Brien trophy match at 2.15. Eric died following a long illness on Christmas day. Billy Morgan brought Eric into his Sigerson Cup management team in a mentor role in the last few seasons. He was very popular with the players and was always willing to share his vast football experience with those around him.
Prior to kick-off of UCCs Div 2 AIL game with Corinthians of Galway, a minutes slience will be observed for Chris Martin. Chris was a member of this seasons J3 team and unexpectedly
passed away on the 27 Dec last. Chris, a Biological, Earth and Environmental science student, is featured in a team photo of the UCC bulldogs taken earlier in the season – he is 4th from the right on the bottom row.
