Badminton raise funds for CUH Children’s Charity
A very big month for UCC Badminton players as many players have competed at some of the highest levels in Munster and National competitions over the last 4 weeks, representing Cork at inter-county level most recently across 4 divisions.
UCC Badminton has a proud tradition of players competing to represent Cork in Munster competitions. Of the last 2 years several players have been selected for the Cork inter-county squads at grade D, E , F, G and H . This year, representatives from UCC played at division E, F and H levels. Of these teams we are delighted to congratulate those on Division F & H on their Munster wins last weekend, now paving their way to All Irelands in April.
For individual competitors, congratulations to our singles and doubles players who competed in the Munster’s and nationals in February. Both placed first in the singles in their division C & D and later in mixed doubles. Congratulations to both. Further congratulations to Yao Yu and Nguyen Long who played in the National Forza Grade 2 doubles competition last weekend. Both played incredibly well and did UCC proud – travelling to the far off reaches to Dublin.
In other news, it is an exciting time for UCC Badminton as the club will soon be presenting a cheque of just over €1,000 to Cork University Hospitals Children’s Appeal which was raised by our hosting of a charity tournament on the 27th of January. The day went incredibly well, with players from divisions C and F playing mixed, doubles and singles competitions. We would like to thank all players who contributed so generously on the day. It was great to see people out for great cause and great games.
Switching sports, while much of the focus over the past week has been on the UCC Senior Football and Hurling teams following their Sigerson and Fitzgibbon success. Attention is now switched to the Ladies Intermediate football team who take on Mary Immaculate in the next round of the Moynihan Cup. Also this week, UCC Junior Hurlers take on UL in the Munster Final, this game takes place Wednesday evening at 6pm in the Mardyke Sports Grounds. The Fresher Footballers travel to Dublin to face University of Ulster in their Championship quarter final. Finally on Thursday both the Fresher A & B Hurlers travel to Limerick and Waterford respectively for their championship fixtures.
