B McLean Cup Final Hockey Match Report
UCC MHC Seconds played Waterford Seconds in the final of the McLean Cup on Sunday 9th of April in Garryduff. They came out on top in a thrilling 3-1 win. The match started off at a slow pace with UCC retaining a lot of possession but not making any progress up the pitch. UCC very nearly went ahead early on when forward Hugh Woulfe rounded the keeper but could not finish off his reverse side. The deadlock was broken after 20 mins when a well-struck ball played across the D by Brandon McEvoy and deflected in by Shane O’ Sullivan.
Waterford then started to press forward and nearly scored an equaliser when an attacker broke through the middle of the defence but was denied by a superb save from keeper Tim Buckley. UCC then dominated the ensuing exchanges and enviably further added to their tally on 33 minutes thanks to a Mark Horgan flick to the bottom corner. UCC then made it 3-0 two minutes later when a well struck shot by Hugh Woulfe was expertly deflected in by Mark Horgan for his second of the evening to make it 3-0.
The half finished 3-0, UCC comfortable were throughout, with goalkeeper Tim Buckley only called into action once. Waterford started the second half well by pressing the UCC back four high up the pitch, but Eoin Doyle, John McEvoy, Ricky Byrne and Michael Delaney dealt with it expertly.
In truth, it was a rather uneventful second 35 with Waterford ultimately not possessing the firepower to challenge a quality UCC side. As the game drew to a close Waterford were successful in winning two penalty corners, however both of which were comfortably saved by ‘keeper Tim Buckley. With 30 seconds left on the clock Waterford did manage to hit the back of the net, however it was nothing more than a conciliation.
Overall, it was a hugely impressive performance from the UCC side even if they were guilty of taking their foot off the pedal for spells in the second half. It marks the end of the 16/17’ season for the Men’s Hockey Club and also an end of sublime centre back John McEvoy’s UCCHC career as he finishes his degree this summer. We thank him for his stellar service and wish him all the success in the future.
