London Metropolitan Regatta 2017

Last weekend saw a group of 17 from UCC Rowing Club make the now annual trip to Dorney Lake in London to compete at the prestigious London Metropolitan Regatta on the 2012 Olympic Rowing Venue.

The highlight of the weekend came in the form of an impressive win by the Tier 3 Men’s Coxless Four of Thomas Higgins, Evan White, Julian Larkin and David Keohane who fought hard in the final to take the Old Goring Cup on Sunday, after making easy work of their heat. An additional fourth place finish for the men in the final of the Tier 2 Coxed Fours suggests an exciting lead up to the National Championships in July.

The Women’s Club Four also produced strong results throughout the weekend with a 6th place finish in the Tier 2 Coxed Fours after a seasons best time for Fiona O’Keeffe, Katie Nagle, Ellen Desmond, Clara Rowe-Ham and cox Cormac O’Connell. The same crew came away with a 5th place finish in the Tier 3 event final after battling it out with a close pack for the second half of the race.
Newly formed Men’s Pair combination of Stephen Murphy and David Synnott built on a strong row in their heat to finish with a notable 3rd Place in the final of the Tier 1 Championship Pairs on Saturday. Sunday came with more success for the duo adding a 2nd place finish in the final of the Tier 2 category behind the crew from Leander Club.
Stephen O’Connor competed with the Under-23 Lightweight Quad as part of the ongoing national trial process. A 3rd place in the Tier 1 Championship Quad on Saturday and a 6th on Sunday gives the squad confidence in their preparations for the Under-23 World Championships in July.
