UCC Cycle for World Suicide Prevention Day

Hosted by the International Association for Suicide Prevention,  World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) takes place on Thursday September 10th 2015.

Over 800,000 people die by suicide across the world each year with each individual suicide representing a tragic loss of life. World Suicide prevention Day provides an opportunity for public and professionals to unite in action with our shared goal of preventing suicide.

The theme for WSPD 2015 is Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives. This theme proactively encourages everybody to consider the role that offering support may play in suicide prevention, intervention and also post-suicide.

The Cycle Around the Globe event is a key element of WSPD and 2015 will be the 3rd year of this hugely successful event. The aim of the activity is to empower people from across the globe and all sectors of society to take part in group or individual cycling events, with the ultimate aim of cycling the circumference of the entire globe. In 2014 alone the total distance reached by our eager cycle participants was almost four times the circumference of the planet, a total of 121,963.3 miles!

This year, at 1pm on Friday September 11th a cycle will be organised from UCC, leaving from the Western Gateway Building on Western Road and we would be delighted if you would join us! In advance of your attendance please RSVP me Caroline Daly at CarolineDaly@ucc.ie before the event day.

If you would like to be involved or organise a cycle elsewhere the resources to do so are available online at: https://www.iasp.info/wspd/cycle_around_the_globe.php or alternatively for these queries and others relating to WSPD 2015 you can contact me Caroline Daly at CarolineDaly@ucc.ie.

With the recent placement of bikes for hire everyone can join in. For information on hiring a bike in Cork for this event please see: https://www.bikeshare.ie/

Alternatively there is a growing list of other global events taking place on WSPD 2015, which are available at: https://www.iasp.info/wspd/2015_wspd_activities.php.

We hope that you can support this very unique event, this September 11th 2015.
