2 wins in a weekend for UCC

On Friday evening, UCC made the short journey to Farmers Cross to take on Cork Harlequins Masters in the Cork T20 Cup. Having won the toss, stand-in skipper Kevin O’Sullivan chose to bowl and opened the bowling himself from the City End. Nabeel Tahir shared the new ball from the Clubhouse End and together the pair managed to put the brakes on the Quins batsmen.

However, Quins soon began to cut loose, with Quinten Claasen in particularly good touch and UCC were left with the sizeable challenge of chasing down 156 to win in their 20 overs. Things could not have got off to a worse start when Fahd Baig was caught behind for a duck. However, Shahrukh Nawaz and Kevin O’Sullivan rebuilt the students’ innings and had progressed the score to 98 when O’Sullivan was run out.

UCC were still up against it but a hat-trick of sixes from Kaleem Ahmad in the 17th over proved crucial as the away side triumphed by 4 wickets off the penultimate ball of the match. It was a fantastic win for the visitors whose T20 campaign has been tottering a little in recent weeks.

On Sunday, UCC were on the road again, this time to face Midleton. Having lost the toss, UCC produced a marvellous bowling display to dismiss the hosts for just 75 runs. As had happened just two nights before, there was a wobble or two in the UCC middle over before a quickly scampered single from Sathiendran Ravikumar sealed victory and the points for the students.

A fantastic weekend for UCC Cricket, the question is now can they maintain the momentum into the final few weeks of the season. Here’s hoping!
