World University Games 2017

The opening ceremony of the biggest international third-level competition, the World University Games, is just around the corner this Saturday 19th at 6pm Taipei time (11am Irish time) with eight UCC athletes heading off to compete at the Games. Before leaving, the students had the opportunity to meet the President of UCC, Professor Patrick O’Shea.

UCC students are set to start competition before the opening ceremony even gets underway with the Irish Ladies Soccer Team lining out against Mexico tomorrow 18th at 4pm (9am Irish time) in Hsinchu County Second Stadium. Three UCC students were chosen for the squad – Eve Badana, Ciara McNamara and Katie McCarthy. The team is then due to play Canada on the 22nd August.

The Irish Men’s Soccer Team have a slightly later start date of the 21st August at 7:30pm (12:30pm Irish time) but they are also set to take on Mexico. There is a huge UCC representation on the team with four UCC students were chosen for the squad – Ben McAuliffe, Sean O’Mahony, Sean McLoughlin and Shane Daly-Butz. The UCC FAI Facilitator/ Soccer Development Officer Grege Yelverton is also the Head Coach of the team.

Star athlete and current Irish 200m champion Phil Healy has a little while longer to prepare before her heats of the women’s 200m. They heats take place on the 25th August at 10:15am (3:15am Irish time) in Taipei Stadium. Live coverage of the event can be found here. The semi-finals of the 200m will be taking place the same day (10:15am Irish time) followed by the finals the following day (12:55pm Irish time).
