Weekend Report

OPEN MARTIAL ARTS:
UCC martial arts clubs competed in the now annual Open Martial Arts Intervarsities. This is a compromised rules martial arts intervarsity open to many of the martial arts disciplines which take place on campus:

UCC female students dominated the female black/red/brown category. Results included Anya Curran’s fantastic 1st place in both female points and continuous sparring sections as well as 2nd in mixed kata/patterns. Emer Varley 3rd in female continuous sparring. Siobhan Ladden 3rd in points sparring. Alexander Gannon 3rd in mixed kata/pattern. Omed Poshdary 3rd in mixed kata/patterns.

 

POWERLIFTING:
At the IPF novice competition Sean Hickey placed first in his category and got invited to compete at nationals. Conor Kennedy and Darren Horgan were also invited to compete at the upcoming nationals following their performances and will join Dan Hurley, Claire Kelly and Adam Keane other UCC students who had already qualified to compete in Nationals.

At IDFPA  Single lifts Jack O’ Dwyer and Eoin Jefferies came first and second respectively in the squat event. In the Bench event Roisin Merz placed first among her female class and attempted to break the Irish record. With the men Luke Clark, Jack O’Dwyer and Eoin Jefferies came first, second and third respectively. In the deadlift event Jean Kelly placed first in her category. All these members are in with a chance to compete at worlds.

 

HURLING:
UCC failed to qualify for the upcoming Fitzgibbon Cup Finals weekend following defeat to LIT at the Mardyke last Tuesday.

UCC Fresher “B” defeated DCU GAA Academy 2:10 – 2:06 on Tuesday in Dublin

 

GAELIC FOOTBALL:
UCC fresher “B” defeated NUIG 3-06:1-06

UCC Seniors were defeated by UCD & are out of the Sigerson Cup.

 

CAMOGIE:
UCC were dramatically beaten on the Ashbourne Cup final yesterday by UL on a scoreline of UCC 4-07 : 3-12 UL

 

HOCKEY:
UCC men’s senior hockey defeated Ashton 10-0 in their Munster League match on Tuesday night last.

They followed this up with a 5-3 victory over Limerick on Saturday

UCC senior women were defeated 0-7 by Ulster Elks in their EY League match on Saturday & 1-3 by UCD on Sunday

 

SOCCER:

UCC seniors defeated College Corinthians 3:2 in the annual Colours match at the Mardyke on Saturday. This doubled up as a Munster Senior League match.

 

TRAMPOLINE:
UCC were very successful at the intervarsities at the weekend:

UCC Team A came second with Jack Davis, Tom Sheppard, Becca Flaherty and Lauren Murphy on the team, whilst in individual events:

Elite men – Jack Davis (1st)
Elite women – Becca Flaherty (1st)
Advanced men – Tom Sheppard (1st)
Intermediate women – Denise Bunce (1st)

UCC were 3rd in terms of the shield scores behind UCD & QUB. The people with the 6 highest form scores were:

ATHLETICS:

UCC competed at the indoor intervarsities in Athlone last Friday.

Women’s:

60m hurdles: Shannen Dawkins – 3rd

200m: Phil Healy – 1st

1,500m: Jessica Coyne – 3rd

Weight for distance: Laura McSweeney – 3rd

Men’s:

800m: Liam Hennessy – 2nd

3,000m: Ben Thistlewood

Shot Putt: Patrick McSweeney – 3rd

Weight for Distance: Michael Kenny – 1st

Patrick McSweeney – 2nd
UCC Quercus Scholarship holder Chris Mintern came 2nd in the 5km Kilworth road race.
