UCC Sailing I named Team of the Year

UCC 35th Annual Sports Star Awards included the presentation of ‘Team of the Year’ .  With so many successes across range of sports in UCC this year, it was a very competitive title.

This year’s deserving winners were:

UCC Gold Fleet (Sailing I):

  • Team Racing Nationals – 1st place – Nov 2017

ITRA nationals 2017 hosted in Baltimore saw UCC claim the national title for the second year in a row. UCC 1 met last years intervarsity champions TCD 1 in the final in the best of 5 races with UCC coming out 3-2 winners

  • Their next big victory came in the IUSA Events where they finished up as overall winners: Winning one of the events & coming runner up in 2 other events to claim the overall title.
  • The IUSA Varsities hosted by UCC and co-hosted by NUIG in Kilrush saw some of the best racing that has been seen in years. They met UCD 1in the semi-finals, the only other Irish team left in the competition where it was a best of 5 and this was for the IUSA varsities championship title so the pressure was on. UCC won the first two races, but they then lost the third race so they were then under a bit of pressure. The team worked hard and won the next race to solidify their place in the finals, where they faced off against the leaders of the round robin SUSA. The team put on a great show with the support of fellow UCC teams cheering them on they got the win winning the best of five in the first three races.

And as recently as this past weekend,  more success came to the UCC club with UCC “1” winning the IUSA student yachting worlds qualifiers that were on in Howth & UCC are now invited to the student yachting worlds next year
