UCC advance to Intervarsity Cricket Championship Semi-Finals with win over DCU
For the fourth consecutive year, UCC have progressed to the tournament stage of the IUCA Intervarsity Championships. The difference this year is that they will enjoy home advantage following a successful bid to host the finals of this year’s Trevor West trophy.
Their bid to reach to last four did not get off to a good start however, losing the toss and then three quick wickets to fall to 18-3 against DCU at Curraheen Park on Sunday. Junaid Amin then joined Qassim Butt at the crease and they put on a mammoth fourth wicket partnership of 152 to wrest control of the match back for the home side. Swift cameos from Denny Davids and Cian Scannell put the gloss on a huge first innings score of 251-6.
Visibly under pressure following the concession of over 250 runs, DCU soon found themselves in further trouble with Ruadhan Jones and Junaid Amin combining to remove the first four batsmen for just 17 runs. Despite a middle order fightback the Dublin side never recovered and folded to 44 all out in just over 22 overs, Ruadhan Jones the pick of the UCC bowlers with impressive figures of 4-7.
UCC now face the formidable task of a semi-final with the University of Ulster but with home advantage, Shahrukh Nawaz’s side will be hopeful of springing a shock at the ‘Dyke on Wednesday 1st June.
