U23 World Ultimate Championships Preview

This year, the World U23 Ultimate Championships will be held at the UCL Sports Ground, near St Albans in London from the 12th to the 18th of July.

Ireland will send both an open and mixed team to this tournament and we are delighted to be able to announce that there are a total of 15 UCC players involved in these teams.

Over the coming week we will be following the progress of both Irish teams and we would like to take this opportunity to wish them the very best of luck.

Under 23 Open Team

This tight knit group has been working hard in preparation for the World Championships since they formed in September. The majority of players on the team have had previous experience playing on national teams and as such are used to dealing with the pressure that is involved and they know what to expect from such a tournament.

After recently going undefeated at London Calling, Tour 2, there is high expectations for this well prepared and experienced team. Seeded 12th, the boys are hoping to beat their seeding considerably and at least, finish in the top 8 bracket.

The team are in Pool C alongside Australia, Austria, The Philippines and Belgium with their first game starting tomorrow morning (13th) at 11:30. This game will be one of their toughest games as they face 3rd seeds, Australia who are equally as prepared and even more experienced. The pool games will continue until Tuesday evening and on Wednesday, the top 3 teams in each pool will progress to the power pool stages.

The UCC players on the open team are:

Ben Noonan (Captain), Colin Feely, David Forde, David Smith, Donnchadh McAuliffe, Matthew Feely, Matthew Staunton.

Under 23 Mixed Team

In comparison to the open team, the mixed team is relatively inexperienced and was formed with the strong intention of helping to develop some of the more inexperienced players in Irish Ultimate.

The team was formed three months ago and after just three training weekends and one warm up tournament they will face tough competition throughout the week.

Last weekend, the team attended Dublin’s Golden Cup which was their first tournament together. Despite the fact that they were missing some integral players due to injury, the team played very well and finished in a very respectable 13th place.

Following an impressive performance by the previous Irish U23 mixed team in Toronto in 2013 the team are seeded 3rd heading into the competition tomorrow, just behind Canada and the USA. Other countries in their pool include USA, Great Britain, Germany, Chinese Taipei and India.

Their first game is 9:30 tomorrow morning when the team will meet with a very experienced German side in what is sure to be a challenging and fast paced match.

The UCC players on the Mixed team are:

David O’Regan, Edel Cormac (VC), Eoghan McConville (VC), Lee Griffin, Orla O’Regan, Sinead Dunne, Shane Walsh.

Andrew McGovern (Assistant manager)
