Training weekend at Ballyhass Lakes

Date: 21st – 22nd February 2015

A truly fantastic and triumphant weekend of diving was had by members of the UCC Subaqua Club. It was our first visit to Ballyhass Lakes, a beautifully renovated Activity Centre located in North Cork. the activity centre and trout fishery provided the perfect, yet slightly chilly, training venue for the rapidly advancing trainee group of 2014/2015.

Two day trips on Saturday and Sunday were made, this involved all-round commitment from those packing & unloading gear on both days, as well as those driving. Sincere appreciation to all those who helped in any manner. Eleven trainees, five instructors and a handful of D* and club divers endured the 5° C waters to make another incredibly successful weekend.

Four divers have earned their CFT qualifications so far this year, and many are only a few dives away from certification, congratulations to you all.
This is fantastic progress and we may even be on par with last years astonishing accomplishment of certifying 16 new divers; that’s over 10% of all CFT divers certified in Ireland last year!

We are very grateful to the Ballyhass Lakes Activity Centre for providing the facilities for safe diving. It is a venue we highly recommend for any outdoor activities and we plan on returning for more freshwater diving. As always we thankful to our Instructors; Daire, Alan, John, Dan, Graham, Ray, Séamus with a special mention to Steve from Cork SAC, and to all the helpers, shore-marshall and drivers.

To our tolerant team of trainees: Well Done & keep going, the cold months are over and the waters are beginning to warm, soon you will reap the reward of Spring diving from all the time you’ve dedicated so far. You’re involvement in the club means a lot to us as divers and as friends.
