UCC boasts in the region of 60 sports clubs to cater for a broad range of interests. The Mardyke Sports Grounds caters for a range of indoor & outdoor activities. The outdoor facilities include a fully floodlit synthetic pitch which caters for UCC hockey clubs, recreational soccer in addition to ultimate frisbee, lacrosse, Flag Football to name but a few. The fully floodlit athletics track caters for our athletes & club needs, while the Prunty Pitch is home to UCC rugby Club for their AIL matches & the soccer club for some of their Munster Senior League matches. The GAA pitch caters for our GAA club’s needs. The Mardyke Arena our indoor facility caters for the recreational student & the indoor club needs. It boosts a state of the art fitness gym in addition to a swimming pool, sports halls & indoor climbing wall. In addition to these facilities there are 50 acres of playing fields at Curraheen known affectionally as “The Farm”. This is home to UCC Rugby, Soccer, GAA Cricket & several other sports.

UCC provides a wealth of opportunity for students to get involved in a range of activities to varying levels & all are encouraged to get involved.


The summer of 2018 saw the Mardyke Sports grounds host a series of international events indoor & outdoor.

The Mardyke Arena hosted the FIBA Women’s European Championships for Small Countries and the World & European Inline Figure Skating Champions while the UCC Department of Sport & Physical Activity hosted a series of international hockey events in association with Hockey Ireland: Senior International Men’s Hockey matches: Ireland v France, Ireland Women’s v Japan 3 match Series followed by the Six Nations U16 Championship boys & girls. These events really put UCC Sport on the international map.

Some of our outstanding successes in the past twelve months include:

UCC Seniors were promoted to Division 1A of the All Ireland League for 2018/19  having won their promotion play-offs.

UCC captain Paul Kiernan claimed the Division 1B “Player of the Year” for his role in leading UCC to Division 1A for the first time at an awards ceremony in Dublin


UCC won the Donal Walsh Trophy (U20 competition) first the first time this year.

UCC Quercus Sports Scholar Jack O Sullivan was selected on the Irish U20 team for the U20 Six Nations Championship and was awarded Player of the Match in two of the matches


UCC Rugby Club players Jack O Sullivan, Peter Sylvester, Bryan O Connor & James French were selected on the Irish U20 Squad for the U20 World Cup



UCC Quercus Sports Scholar Fionn Lyden was crowned “Champion of Champions” at the All Ireland Irish Sailing Championships held on Lough Owel with his crew member Liam Manning, also a UCC student in October 2017.

Fionn Lyden also came 3rd at Finn U23 World Championships, August 2017


UCC competed in the Irish Team Racing National Championships in November & UCC 1 consisting of Mark Hassett, Fionn Lyden, Cian O’ Regan, Liam Manning(captain), Lisa Smith, & Eoin Lyden won the event.

UCC also won ‘Event of the Year’ for organising the intervarsities which ran for 3 full days, with 30 teams from 10 different colleges with over 250 races completed in the week.


UCC won 4 National titles at the National Rowing Championships in Cork in July 2018. Quercus Scholar Ronan Byrne won the Men’s Intermediate Sculls. Ronan was also selected to represent Ireland at the World U23 Championships in Poland late summer 2018.

UCC also won the Men’s Club 4 Coxed, Men’s Club 8+, and Men’s Intermediate 2X.


At the intervarsity Championships, UCC was well represented at the event & did very well:

UCC competes in a number of regattas throughout Ireland & competed at the London Met Regatta this year.


UCC rowers Aifric Keagh (UCC Graduate) & current UCC student Tara Hanlon represented Ireland at the World Cup III, Series in Lucerne and came 4th in the Women’s Repechage. UCC graduate Andy Harrington also represented Ireland at these championships


At the Paolo d’Aloja Memorial International Regatta in Italy, UCC student Emily Hegarty won bronze in the Women’s Heavyweight Single Sculls

Aifric Keogh & her partner Ailis Crowley won bronze in the Women’s Heavyweight Pair


David Synnott was awarded “Leader of the Year” at the Student Sport Ireland Awards in May 2018 for his role in UCC Rowing Club for 2017/18


UCC women’s Hockey were crowned Munster Senior League Champions for 2017/18. They also won the Munster Senior Cup Plate.

The Senior team has qualified for the 1st Division of the League for 2018/19

Jenny Clein, & Hannah Humphries were selected on the Irish U21 hockey squad

Kate Murphy & Saoirse O Leary were selected on the Irish Universities squad.

UCC Men’s Hockey were runners up in the Munster Senior League and they won the Peard Cup.

UCC were Plate Final winners in the Mauritius Cup (Intervarsities)

The Senior team has qualified for the 1st Division of the EY League for 2018/19

UCC Soccer Club continue to maintain very high standards at both collegiate & Munster Senior League level

UCC seniors were Colleges & Universities Football League (CUFL) Finalists and won both the Beamish & Donie Forde Cups in Munster


UCC students Sean McLoughlin, Sean O Mahony, Shane Daly-Butz, Daniel Pender, Cathal O Hanlon & Ben McAuliffe received international caps at a ceremony at the Aviva stadium from FAI CEO John Delaney. This is the first year that the Irish Colleges &Universities students received international caps for representing the combined colleges & universities team.


UCC’s Shane Daly Butz was selected on the Irish Amateur team & on the Munster/Ulster Regions Cup Squad for the European Regions Cup Finals. Shane has been called into the Cork City FC extended training panel for the summer months. Sean has just completed his undergraduate at UCC

UCC were beaten Harding Cup finalists for the second year in a row

UCC hosted the Crowley Cup in Cork & the UCC Junior soccer team won the Duggan Cup defeating UL 3-2 at the Farm in March

UCC soccer player Sean McLoughlin was awarded the FAI “International Colleges & Universities Player of the Year” at the FAI Awards in March.

He followed this with a “man of the match” performance for Cork City in the Airtricity League 2 days later. Sean joined Cork City following an outstanding season with UCC last year and is now a regular first team player starting most games in central defence.


Cork successfully defended their All Ireland title last September.

UCC was well represented at the All Ireland Camogie Finals Day with 15 students lining out for both Cork Intermediate & Senior teams: Orla Cronin, Meabh Cahalane, Katrina and Pamela Mackey, Niamh McCarthy, Chloe Sigerson, Aisling Thompson, Keeva McCarthy, Libby Coppinger, Maeve McCarthy, Hayley Ryan, Lauren Callanan, Rebecca Sheehan, Amy O’Connor and Hannah Looney with the Senior team being victorious.

UCC’s Orla Cronin was also named Player of the Match.

UCC student Katrina Mackey and UCC Graduate Orla Cotter, received All Stars for their performances with Cork in the All Ireland Camogie Championship.

UCC student Sean Powter, & UCC graduates Paul Geaney, Paul Murphy, Peter Crowley and Conor Sweeney represented Ireland at the International Rules Tests in Australia.

Former UCC student, Paul Geaney, received an All Star for his performance with Kerry in the All Ireland Championship

UCC was well represented on All Ireland Finals Day  in September 2017 with 15 players with College connections on the Waterford team, panel and extended training panel amongst them were Masters students Jamie Barron and Conor Gleeson. What was also unique was the fact that the captain Kevin Moran and team manager Derek McGrath along with selector Eoin Murphy are also graduates of the University.
UCC’s Mark Coleman and Jamie Barron and  UCC Graduate Kevin Moran received All Stars for their performances during the All Ireland Hurling Championship.

16 UCC students & graduates were part of the Cork hurling success in the Munster hurling Final.

UCC Junior Hurlers were crowned Munster Junior Hurling Champions & All Ireland Champions having defeated UCD in the final

UCC Fresher “B” hurlers were crowned All Ireland champions

UCC student Tommy Harty represented Ireland at the Student Riders Nations Cup in Lund, Sweden. There he was crowned overall champion, placing 4th in show jumping and 5th in dressage individually, and was a member of the team that won the overall team championship, placing first in show jumping and third in dressage competing against 12 other teams from Europe and North America

UCC fencers Kevin MacSweeney & Lillas Healy represented the Irish Universities at the Four Nations Tournament in Leeds. The Irish side coming third overall behind England and Scotland


At the annual IFDA Awards held in Dublin, UCC swept the board with:

Caitlin Looney winning Ladies “College Player of the Year”

Brionagh Healy winning Ladies “Schools Player of the Year”

UCC won “College of the Year”

UCC Graduate Leanne O’Neill won an award for “Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Irish Disc Sports”


UCC Ultimate Open first team brought home gold from Limerick in the Open Indoor Championships in February.

UCC Ultimate Ladies Developmental Team came second in the Ladies Developmental Intervarsities which were held in the Mardyke Arena in March


UCC Women’s won the Outdoor Intervarsities for the sixth year in a row

The club won the “Most Spirited Team” at Cork Open Women’s Division, Mixed Outdoor Iv’s and women’s outdoors Iv’s



UCC Volleyball Club completed a very successful year . The men’s team were crowned Intervarsity winners & SSI (Student Sport Ireland) league winners while the women’s team were beaten intervarsity finalists & were crowned SSI league winners. The men’s team went on to represent the Irish Universities at the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) intervarsities

UCC Graduate Phil Healy continues to “burn up” the track with impressive performances both indoor & outdoor. She has qualified for the European Championships to be held later this summer in 100m, 200, 400m & relay events. This year alone, Phil has broken the Irish outdoor 100m & 200m records.

UCC Graduate and former sports scholarship recipient Adrian O Sullivan was part of the Senior Men’s Irish team who won a bronze medal at the Small Nations European Championships in San Marino recently.

Adrian has also agreed a professional contract with reading Rockets in the British basketball League for the coming season

UCC Graduate Audrey O Flynn was selected on the Irish Women’s 7’s squad for the World Cup 7’s.

Audrey is also a former senior international hockey player
