President Prof. Patrick O’Shea acknowledges UCC Sports Clubs
UCC President Prof. Patrick O’Shea acknowledged UCC Sports Clubs in a unique reception to personally thank clubs for their contribution to UCC Sports Clubs and the success had in 2018-19
UCC sports clubs have had a tremendous year with many clubs having podium finishes. While all successes are of great importance to UCC, UCC winning the Sigerson Cup, Fitzgibbon Cup, & Collingwood Cup all in one season is a unique achievement. Add in the Kelly Cup – the women’s soccer Intervarsities to the Collingwood Cup success and UCC had a clean sweep of the two major soccer intervarsity events.
UCC volleyball Club have had their best year ever, winning both the ladies & men’s Intervarsities, the beach volleyball Intervarsities, the Munster Cup & the women’s team came 3rd at the British universities Intervarsities.
The Trampoline club were overall winners in the major competitions they competed in this year – again a unique occasion for them – overall intervarsity winners, Munster Cup winners, & ISTO (Irish Student Trampoline Open) winners while they also had great success at the Scottish Open.
The Ultimate Frisbee Club continue to dominate the third level scene and had several wins this year culminating in 16 players, & 3 student coaches being selected for Irish Teams for summer events in the coming months
UCC Soccer Club continues to thrive with success sin the Collingwood Cup this year. The seniors are top of the Munster Senior League with 3 matches to go and are in the O Connell Cup Final & Beamish Cup semi-final while the Junior 2 are in the City Challenge Cup final in the coming weeks.
Several players are hoping to be selected on the Irish Student squad for the upcoming World Student Games which will take place in Naples in July. Wishing them all the best in their endeavours to be selected.
UCC’s own Greg Yelverton is coach to the men’s team and we wish him every success in the tournament.
UCC Women’s soccer won the Kelly Cup (Women’s Intervarsities) and their captain Ciara McNamara has been selected for the Irish Women’s team to travel to the World Student Games this July – just announced!!!
UCC GAA have had a great year winning both the Sigerson & Fitzgibbon Cups – a rare double on the GAA scene – UCC were the last third level institution to achieve this double as well!!!
To the Camogie team – UL are still your nemesis, but your day will come. UL have beaten them for the past number of years in the Final of the Ashbourne.
UCC Rugby Club – congratulations on retaining your AIL Division 1A status – a fantastic achievement with such a young team. Congratulations to James Taylor on being top points scorer in the division & being awarded “Rising Star” of the Division One at the IRFU awards recently. Congratulations to the U20 team who were Donal Walsh Trophy winners – for the 2nd year in a row and unfortunate not to win the U20 All Ireland title – beaten by Trinity in the Final.
UCC Rowing Club are developing quite a reputation in Ireland and are going in stature. UCC has several students on Irish squads and all vying for a seat in a boat for the 2020 Olympics. The Club had numerous successes at the recent Skibbereen Regatta & this augers well for the outdoor season ahead. The club has competed in Holland already this season & will head to England for the London Met in the coming weeks before competing in the national Championships.
UCC Ladies Hockey have retained their EY Division 2 status for next year – another great achievement for a UCC club.
We could be here all day if we were to mention all club successes this year – this is just a flavour of what we have achieved as a university on the sporting field. Canoe, kickboxing, athletics, and boxing were also in attendance this evening as well & we congratulate them all on their successes as well.
Other club successes include archery, dance, darts, sailing, golf, karate, Judo, powerlifting, Olympic Handball, Handball, Tae Kwon Do, Table tennis, Swimming, squash & Surf and many more!!!!
Thank the club committees for their organisation of their clubs throughout the year
A well done to those clubs who organised and hosted an event this year – Powerlifting, Volleyball, Trampoline, Ultimate Frisbee and many more.
Thank club mentors, coaches & many other volunteers.
Thank the students for their part in representing UCC & making us “The Sporting University” of the year – all other universities are jealous of our successes this year!!!
Thanks to the Sports Department staff for assisting the club throughout the year, the 4 Development Officers, the sports operatives for looking after the outdoor facilities & the Mardyke Arena for their support of clubs.
Thank you to the Bank of Ireland for their continued support of UCC Sports Clubs
UCC is delighted with the club success this year. This in association with the Strategic Plan recently endorsed will help put UCC on the sporting map & make us the “Go to” University in the country.
We look forward to see what 2019-20 brings for UCC Sport.
