IUAA Indoor Championships 2019

On Friday 9th February, UCC Athletic Club travelled to the impressive International Arena in AIT to compete in the IUAA Indoor Championships 2019. After a long winter and intensive periods of training, UCC were keen to get onto the track and field and put their hard work to the test.   An impressive start to the season which saw the club come away with a medal haul of six.

Laura Cussen won the first medal of the day for UCC finishing third place in the long jump, while Laura Quigley finished a respectable 8th. Switching disciplines, shortly after Ciara Hickey gave a superb performance to secure second place in the pole vault set a new UCC record of 3.30m.  Meanwhile Una Samuels narrowly missed out on a medal place, finishing fourth.

Onto the track, Shona Lowe progressed to the final in both the 60m and 200m sprint but unfortunately missed a spot on the podium along with Aisling Kelly who narrowly missed a medal with 4th in the 1500m in a close battle to the finish line. Louise Shanahan had a successful day in the 800m with a silver medal in a time of 2:09.89. Annette Quaid ran an incredible race to set a new M40 400m record of 58.98 to place 5th in the final.

In the triple jump another record was set, this time Grace Furlong set a new UCC record of 11.44m to win a silver medal. A phenomenal team performance by UCC ladies which earned them second place behind DCU in the points table.

Similarly, the men’s team had a great day led by Cillian Kirwan who placed a fantastic 2nd in the 800m with a time of 2:00.97. Michael Power and David McGlynn narrowly missed medals in the 3000m finishing 4th and 9th respectively. John Browne failed to progress to the final of the 60m as the competition was intense but ran a very respectable time of 7.13.

Debutant Pietro Tozzi finished a superb 6th in the long jump with a leap of 6.08m in his first intervarsity competition for UCC.

Overall, UCC Athletic Club had a very successful day. Congratulations to all those who competed and a special thanks to Athlone IT for hosting this fantastic event.

Next up for the Athletics club is the Cross Country hosted NUI Galway in early March.  Then preparation continues for the outdoor track and field event which takes place in Athlone in early April.
