Hockey Intervarsities hosted by UCC

The Hockey Inter Varsities have swiftly crept up on every college student hoping to make the final squad of 18 who will proudly represent their college at the event.

UCC will be hosting the competition this weekend for the first time in 5 year. The games will be divided up so that half are played in UCCs home ground at the Mardyke Sports Grounds, and the other half will be played in Garyduff Sports Centre found just outside Douglas village. This tournament, which is very early on in the year, lets teams develop together prior to the main body of their respective leagues whilst also allowing further team bonding over a tough one weekend tournament.

The women’s tournament will consist of 12 college teams from around the country, split into two different leagues in respect to where they finished in the tournament last year. The divisions are then split into groups, where everyone plays each other once with the top two team progress to the semi finals.

The group games will be held Saturday and Sunday morning. The semi finals will be held Sunday afternoon and the finals on Monday.

Although this is a college tournament, there will be plenty of talent to be seen, such as current Irish captain Meghan Frazer and Shirley McCay who will be leading their University of Ulster troops to the Rebel county. They will be hoping for a repeat of their outright victory from last year. UCC are the underdogs in the top division of this tournament and will be looking for an improvement from their 4th place ranking last year.

The teams in division A will be as follows: University of Ulster, DCU, UCC, UCD, Trinity and Queens. The division B teams are as follows: NUIM, RCSI, ITT, NUIG, CIT and UL.

UCC Ladies play DCU at 11.00AM and UU at 8.00PM in the Mardyke on Saturday. UCC Mens take on Trinity at 2.00PM on Saturday and UU at 10.30AM on Sunday, both also at the Mardyke. Semi final and final times are relevant to pool placings.

This weekend promises to be another cracker and promises to add to the great spirit that will be in the city due to the Jazz Festival. Come on down to either venue and show your support to your respective team.
