A Successful Semester for UCC Judo
The UCC Judo club has grown in recent years to be one of the biggest martial arts clubs in the college. Their slogan “Throw Yourself into Something New with UCC Judo!” embraces the club atmosphere as new faces are always welcome. With training sessions every Monday and Wednesday night, Judo is a great way to get fit, learn a new skill and make friends. As a sport it also is a great opportunity to compete in competitions and here are a few of the highlights from Semester 1 2016:
- On the 19th of November 5 of our members traveled to the North West open in Derry where they won 3 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze individual medals as well as the men’s team trophy, which UCC have now won 2 years in a row!
- On the 3rd of December 8 UCC players traveled to the All Irelands where UCC won 5 medals. Aobh O’Shea won gold medals in both junior (U21) and senior women’s U57kg and also earned her black belt becoming the first woman in UCC to do so. Francesco Massardo won the U60kg title. Miguel Sánchez and Daniel Murphy also won bronze medals in their respective categories.
Reports on the clubs success have been featured in the UCC Express as well as in the Evening Echo. Overall Judo have had a very successful first half of the year, and are now looking forward to inter varsities on the 18th of February in University College Dublin (UCD)!
The club also hosted a Self Defense Seminar in collaboration with UCC FemSoc on 21st November and raised €220 for Cork University Hospital Charity in the process!
